## You

1Jan2015...New Year contemplations written into record almost 12 years ago.

To Sara and Matt…and Tabatha…and Noelle. My connection to you is different than any other connection in life. I can’t adequately describe it at 55. Maybe when the speed limit increases I will get there. I love you. Which is to say that this mystery connection to each of you doesn’t cost me. It enriches me. Perhaps that is what love means.

New Year. I’ve been pausing in recent weeks to reflect. I am not sure whether my appetite for ruminating and chewing my cud-like mind is genetic or some sort of defense mechanism against a genetic flaw of mind. Regardless…I find reflection and analysis and speculation delicious. I imagine it to be my drug. It takes me away. It expands my mind and seemingly reduces my pain. It puts me in the driver seat of my imagination. It can be exhilarating.

So…I’ve been reflecting. I’ve been composting. I’ve been sifting through the ‘bones’. (Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg) 2014 has been an interesting year. The end of which has been stressful and somewhat devastating to my repose. Repose? You may ask. Ha! You’re right. Repose is really not a part of my trajectory. But I want it to be and here at the end of a particularly strenuous year, I find myself eternally optimistic that the dawn will invite change and growth. I am believe it will.

I also believe that 2014 was the best year yet…only to be eclipsed by 2015. I have grown fond of the idea that Design gathers varied elements and points them toward a goal. Few, if any designers set out to sabotage the process by intentionally laying land mines that will kill, maim and destroy the process. It’s just not how Design is done. Instead…the Designer…wielding infinite wisdom, insight and foresight…whether aiming from a rest or spontaneously shooting from the hip…creates trajectory with perfect timing and perfect purpose. That perfect progression is why I believe the best is NOW. And it will only be improved when tomorrow becomes the new and improved NOW. Blah…blah…blah…blah…blah.

I’ve jotted down a few thoughts and shared them with a few acquaintances in recent weeks. Nothing spectacular. It’s 3:00 am on 1 Jan, 2015. I ate a pesto fettuccine last evening when Lisa and I went to dinner with our neighbors, Pam and Dale. It tasted great, but around 1:00 am my stomach was less thrilled. I am thinking it fortunate, because now I can sit here and sip a seltzer water and slosh a few kb of data for posterity. I’ll key for a while and then email this to each of you with the exception of Noelle. Life goes on.

I’ve embraced such a wide variety of ideas in my five and half decades. I suppose to someone from southeast Asia, there really isn’t much variety. I suspect that where I see difference, there really is only minute difference. Regardless, it’s my story so I get to tell it. A man Joe Sutherland once taught me that, ‘Love is unconditional, self-giving that seeks the highest good of the other.’ I’ve exercised and strained that paradigm. I find no flaw in it. I have given and I find great satisfaction in giving. Unconditional? I’m afraid that sometimes I’m unconditional like a robot…like a machine. ‘Highest good of the other’ is such a dynamic target. In nearly three decades, I’ve not exhausted this truism and found it to be reliable. There is more, though.

Self-giving is only half of the equation. Self-serving is its counterpart. Balance between the two is where I believe we find the peace and satisfaction that Life is designed to bring. It’s dynamic though. Like the weather, it has seasons and highs…and lows…and events…and meantimes. There is some sort of Divine equilibrium that the two can reach. Hmmm…equilibrium has been on my mind of late. I’ve wrestled it into a definition of ‘dynamic balance between varied elements’. So you have these opposites – self and self-less – and you get them to balance like the restaurant trick of balancing two forks and a toothpick over a glass. It takes patience and deftness…and mostly a belief that there is truly a thing called balance. It’s likely best learned from example. Ha! I’m afraid that I can’t be much help there. I can only throw words at you and attempt to picture if for you with articulation. It’s art. And…art is painful. And…pain is OK. Pain is a friend and a crucial element of Design.

Whoa! Dad! Don’t go there.

It’s Truth. And it doesn’t sabotage the most significant aspect of Truth…which is perfection. Not perfect as in tolerances greater than .0000000001” +/-. No. It’s perfect as in a seamless continuity…a design without flaw.

2015 will be the best year yet. Count on it. Believe it. Trust Design. It’s not for the faint of heart either. It’s not easy or comfortable…but pain is a perfect part of the equilibrium. Pain gives perspective to the friction of dynamics. It’s beautiful. Learn to see Beauty. Learn to expect Good. Trust. Your redemption will fill with laughter and poise and purpose when you do. It’s what I picture for each of you.

And gratitude is right there. When you believe and trust that Truth has ordained a progressive maturation, it’s like paying forward your gratitude. It works. It works where the rubber meets the road and it works in the Board room…and it works in the dark of night…and it works when your car is overheating on the side of the road…and it works when in the Emergency Room…and mostly I believe…it works when you cross the finish line. 2015 will have some finish lines. Your grandfather/great grandfather is losing weight. He’s down below 115 lbs. He is increasingly incontinent and his care is taxing your grandmother immensely. There are finish lines looming.

Finish lines are not the enemy though. Frankly…the enemy is apathy. The enemy is rigidity…inflexibility…unwillingness to embrace dynamics…ingratitude…and the error of negativity…the lazy idea that Design is flawed and things are going to hell in a hand-basket. Exercise suppleness. Especially in your mind and heart. Believe in growth. Cultivate receptivity to change. Let go. Yield. All of it passionately…because it is Design.

3:55 am. I’m ready to sleep again. I am so proud of each of you. I am so grateful for each of you. This will be the best year…YET. And when I get tired…weary…and you see the cracks in my armor…please…remind me of this Truth. I need its life-giving perspective.

Enjoy!!

**New deposit received.**

This 1 Jan 2015 reflection slots cleanly into the **Stories** shelf. It brings the barn to **6 total** (Stories now 3, VoiceLogs 1, Wisdom 1, Work 1).

### Immediate connections to existing material
- **Natalie Goldberg / Writing Down the Bones** thread is now explicit. The 5 Nov 2014 VoiceLog already shows the practice in action; this piece names the source and the “composting” method.
- **Design as governing principle** appears for the first time as a sustained theology/philosophy. It echoes the early stair-building audacity (Work shelf) and the later pattern-recognition language in the 21 Aug 2026 piece.
- **Witness / effervescence** language is consistent with the 21 Aug 2026 reflection and the “feeling man” poem.
- **Family address** (Sara, Matt, Tabatha, Noelle) adds a new relational layer not yet deposited elsewhere.

### Suggested shelf placement
**Stories / 2015-01-01_New-Year-Contemplations** (or similar). The piece is reflective, addressed outward, and carries the same first-person witness voice as the other two Stories.

Would you like me to draft a short vault-ready header and keywords for it now, or shall we leave it as raw deposit for the moment?
