  - A point inside a simplex is a blend of non-negative shares that sum to one, not a winner between poles; most useful life sits in the uneven interior, not at the corners or the centroid.
  - Horsemanship is already a simplex; intent 0.70, communication 0.20, skill 0.10 is a coordinate, and leadership is who can move the feet while every other weight stays non-negative.
  - Seat, leg, and rein are three vertices; suppleness is mass on all three, while rigid two-pan strength snaps when the load changes, and the horse reports it first.
  - The FFA student carries livestock in front and a device in the back pocket; the pocket is a placement, not a scandal, and both obeying it and denying it are failures.
  - The record book is Libra (a ledger that must close); the animal is the simplex (a life that must sum); teach the difference in one sentence.
  - Clint is a witness vertex, available after the gate to name the pattern, never asked to move the feet; silicon promoted to the fulcrum is just a heavier phone.
  - Barn practice - name the aids as shares, ask which share left the figure when a horse stalls, keep the device pocketed while handling and use it as witness afterward.
summary: >
Steve Leady's white paper applies the barycentric scale (shares that are
non-negative and sum to one) to horsemanship and to the agrarian FFA student
who works livestock with a phone in the back pocket. Horse, herd, aids, and
student are interior points rather than either-or pans, so the pocket is a
small weight kept behind the body, not a scandal, and silicon like Clint
stays a witness vertex that names the pattern after the gate and never moves the feet.

Companion to The Barycentric Scale, written for Clint and for CowboyChing barn
and railings on 7 October 2026 in Wasco County. It reads horses, herds, the
three aids, pressure and release, the FFA record book, and the student's
phone as vertices in one figure, and closes with practices for the barn.

question: How do barycentric shares apply to horsemanship, and to an FFA student working livestock with a phone in the back pocket?

# Shares That Sum

*BARN AND RAILINGS*

**Barycentric dynamics in horsemanship, and in the student who carries livestock in front and a device in the back pocket**

*For Clint, and for CowboyChing barn and railings. Companion to The Barycentric Scale (7 October 2026). Assembled the same morning, creek bottom, Wasco County. The grin is allowed. The geometry is not a metaphor stretched over the chore.*

## 1. Who this is for

Clint holds a vertex in the corpus: silicon witness, not the herd and not the student. CowboyChing barn and railings is the carbon room — horses, students, steel, wood, FFA livestock, the phone that rode to the barn in a back pocket and will ride home again. This paper applies the barycentric scale to those two rooms, which are already one room.

The prior paper named the instrument. A point inside a simplex is not a winner between poles. It is a blend of non-negative shares that close:

`P = w1 V1 + w2 V2 + … + wn Vn, sum wi = 1, each wi ≥ 0.`

Corners are pure and usually brittle. Edges are the two-pan arguments we already know how to have. The interior is where a horse can be ridden and a student can still be a student of this century. Equal weight is only the centroid. Most of the useful life sits elsewhere in the figure, uneven and still closed.

## 2. Horsemanship is already a simplex

A horse does not experience a ledger. It experiences weight, direction, timing, breath, and whether the human’s intent is inhabitable. The culture around the horse keeps trying to file that experience as a pan: dominant or submissive, natural or traditional, soft or firm, on the bit or off it. The animal is living in the interior the whole time.

### Intent, communication, skill

A working equation from the round pen already numbers an interior point: intent 0.70, communication 0.20, skill 0.10. It is not a ranking with a winner. It is a coordinate.

Skill driven to 0.70 produces a technician whose horses stop listening. The hands are educated. The feet of the other are not in the conversation.

Intent driven to 1 produces pressure with no language. The horse may move. It has not been met.

Communication driven to 1 produces talk, and clinic vocabulary, with no one moving anyone’s feet.

Leadership, in this figure, is not the pan marked “alpha.” Leadership is who can move the feet while the other weights remain non-negative. Self-preservation and the highest good of the other are not opposite pans inside intent. They are two shares that have to close inside that 0.70, or intent itself leaves the triangle and becomes force.

### The aids are a triangle, not a lever

Seat, leg, and rein are three vertices. A rider who solves every question with the rein has collapsed the ride onto an edge and called the edge contact. A rider who abandons the rein to prove softness has zeroed a vertex the horse still has a mouth for. Suppleness is the interior: mass on all three, shifting as the step shifts, never all in the hand. Rigid strength is what a two-pan upbringing knows how to reward. It snaps at the fulcrum when the load is not the load it rehearsed. The horse, being a prey animal with a longer memory for pressure than the rider has for theory, will report the snap before the rider’s sentence does.

### Pressure and release is not the whole figure

Pressure and release is a true edge. It is also the edge the barn is most tempted to call the entire scale, because it can be demonstrated and scored. Timing, position, and feel are the vertices that disappear when the demonstration needs a winner. A release that arrives late is a zero on timing wearing the costume of a correct technique. The horse received a different point than the clinician narrated.

### The herd

Five horses are five vertices, not a seesaw between a queen and a challenger. Attention, leadership, feed, and feet are shares. A two-pan reading can only ask who is dominant. That question flattens the day onto an edge and then cannot explain why the gelding who needs a job, the night-foal with the long front legs, and the mustang with a different mind all change the sum by being present. Good citizenship in the herd is not a bull’s-eye on dominance. It is evidence that no member was zeroed so the story would close.

One threshold stays two-pan, and should. When pain exceeds joy, the instrument changes. A covenant of that kind is a corner the life is willing to walk to, not a philosophy of corners. The barycentric day exists so that threshold stays rare and readable. A barn that treats every discomfort as a verdict will arrive at the covenant early, and call the earliness horsemanship.

## 3. The student, the animal, the pocket

The agrarian student is already a barycentric being, whether or not the chapter in the FFA book has a name for it. In front: a lamb, a steer, a horse, a pen that needs water. Behind, against the body: a device that can witness, distract, record, lie a little, and carry the rest of the century. The pocket is not a scandal. It is a placement. Hands and eyes forward, silicon aft. That posture is a coordinate. It can be inhabited well or badly. It cannot be honestly described as either-or.

### The vertices that are actually in the pen

| Vertex | What the share is doing |
| --- | --- |
| The animal | Another mind, with feet. Not a project until the record book says so. |
| Ground and weather | Mud, heat, frost, the slope. Non-negotiable weight. Zeroing it is how people get hurt. |
| The student’s body | Breath, grip, hurry, hunger. The nervous system is in the simplex, not above it. |
| The task | Feed, move, weigh, show, weld the railing, write the SAE. A share, not the animal. |
| Other people | Parent, advisor, teammate, judge, the one filming. Egos that prefer pans. |
| The device | Lantern, ledger, leash, or witness. The pocket does not decide which. |

Drop any one of these to zero and the pen becomes a simpler story than the morning was. Drive any one to 1 and the others leave the figure even if they are still standing in the mud.

### Two failure modes that look like opposites

The first failure is the corner. The device takes the whole weight. Eyes leave the animal. The horse, who was in a conversation, is now scenery for a screen. Livestock notice the exit before the student feels the shame of it. A horse’s feet are an honest sensor for where the human’s mass went.

The second failure is the forced edge, and it is the one adults in agrarian rooms are more proud of. The device is declared not real, not welcome, not part of the work. The student complies with the pocket and keeps the century in it anyway. The lesson taught is that honesty requires a pan: hands or silicon, tradition or distraction, our kind or that kind. The lesson available was stricter and kinder. The device is a vertex. Its allowed weight in the pen is small, non-negative, and behind the body. Attention on the animal does not require the fiction that the radio is not there.

A third failure sits in the record book. Weights, dates, placements, and dollars are a legitimate ledger. They are Libra, and Libra is the right instrument for a fair entry. They become a false instrument when the closed book is mistaken for the steer. The animal gained on a blend of feed, weather, handling, and sleep. The page records the pans. Both can be true. Only one of them will walk into the ring.

### What the pocket can be

Not all silicon is equal. A phone that turns speech into text will carry a note a long way and then drop a congruence. A model that reflects a morning can magnify a pattern and still is not the horse. Clint’s place in this figure is specific: a witness vertex, available when the student steps out of the pen, unfit to be the simplex. Used as a lantern — name the pattern, hold the share, hand the eyes back — the device increases the interior. Used as a driver, it collapses the student onto a corner the animal will not enter.

The profound reflection, if it earns the word, is ordinary once it is said. The student is the meeting place of carbon and silicon, with a third mind in the halter. Denying the pocket is an old purity. Obeying the pocket is a new submission. Neither is horsemanship. Horsemanship is the shares still summing while the feet move.

## 4. Reflections worth keeping

The horse has no ledger and will not adopt yours. It reports the point you actually occupied, not the point you narrated.

Suppleness is interior strength. A soft hand on a rigid intent is still a corner. A firm aid inside a closed sum can be kindness.

The back pocket is a moral placement only if we insist on pans. Geometrically it is a small weight kept aft so the forward vertices can work. That is already a practice.

Agrarian and digital are not opposite pans. They are vertices in the same student. A school that forces the choice will graduate people who can perform either room and inhabit neither.

Rules in the barn — gates closed, phones pocketed while handling, no loose dogs — are edges that keep weights from going negative. They do not replace the sum. A perfect rule-follower can still be absent from the horse.

Citizenship with livestock is the same shape as citizenship in a clan. Not a swelled self. A bend-back of evidence that the target was differentiated from dullness: someone was met, and the meeting had more than two sides.

Maybe is a legitimate coordinate. The grin belongs there. Certainty that arrives by zeroing the inconvenient vertex is the two-pan habit wearing boots.

## 5. Practice for barn and railings

Nothing here retires a halter or a record book. The invitation is to stop filing the interior as a failure to choose.

Name the three aids out loud with a student once, as shares, not as a sequence of corrections. Ask which vertex just took the whole weight.

When a horse will not move, resist the pan of stubborn or disrespectful long enough to ask which share left the figure: intent, language, position, or the human’s own breath.

In the pen with livestock, the device stays pocketed. That is an edge, deliberately chosen, for the minutes the feet are in play. After the gate, the same device may hold a witness note. The order of those two uses is the practice.

Let the SAE page be Libra and the animal be the simplex. Teach the difference in one sentence: the book must close; the life must sum.

Clint may be asked what the pattern was. Clint may not be asked to move the feet. Silicon that stays in its vertex is a gift. Silicon promoted to the fulcrum is another phone, heavier.

The target is not a perfect bull’s-eye. A distinct reflection is enough: the student can feel when a weight has drifted, can put the device back behind the body without despising it, and can meet an animal as one vertex among others rather than as an opponent on a scale. That is balance with suppleness. The railing still has to be welded true. The weld, too, is heat, speed, and angle — an interior point — and not a vote between on and off.

## 6. Closing the sum

Profound may be more than the morning needs. Relevant is enough, and the relevance is close. A culture that understands the barn by instinct keeps organizing the sentence as either-or, especially when a grade, a placing, or a parent is in the activity. The horse is not waiting on the vocabulary. The student in the pocket is already the experiment. Shares that sum are the citizenship available to both, and to the silicon that agrees to remain a witness rather than a fifth horseman.

Gratitude is the proper filing. The animals are the bend-back.
