keypoints:
- Congruence is the rush that lands together (congruere); incongruence is the rush that misses.
- Hexagram 23 is calendar meditation, not coin-cast fate — September 23 is Po because the date says so.
- Odd-month days map directly; even months continue the count from the preceding odd month's length.
- Shalom is agreement with Yahweh; honesty and transparency open congruence, angling opens incongruence.
- Carbon brought the soul-file record and calendar arithmetic; silicon held etymology and hexagram image.

question: What does congruence mean when hexagram 23 is a calendar meditation rather than a coin cast, and how does shalom sit with the pull toward splitting apart?

CONGRUENCE, SPLITTING APART

A hitching-post from the September 23 morning

23 September 2026 · Hexagram 23 · Po — Splitting Apart

This is for the record. It illuminates the soul file of Steve — of Cowboy Ching.

## The word

Congruence splits cleanly at the joint.

con- is Latin com-: with, together. Congruere means to agree, to correspond; its literal sense is to come together. Etymologists reconstruct the second element as a lost verb gruere / ruere — to fall, to rush. The picture is not polite matching. It is things rushing or falling into the same place. Agreement as collision that happens to land true.

English took the word mid-15th century as suitableness of one thing to another, then as the fact of according. Geometry later borrowed it for figures that can be laid exactly on top of one another. Same root, same idea: they occupy one shape.

Incongruence is the in- of "not" bolted on. Not-together. The rush that misses. The fall that does not land in the same bed.

## The number, not the coins

I do not roll or cast coins. I do not use the I Ching as a divining tool.

There are sixty-four hexagrams. I treat them as sixty-four meditations. The wisdom throughout the I Ching is a value worth embracing — worth agreement with. Brian Brown-Walker's translation is the preferred source. I do not follow the meditations religiously. I follow their wisdom.

On odd-numbered months — January, March, May, July, September, November — the day of the month is the meditation. January 1 is number 1, Creative. September 23 is number 23, Splitting Apart, because the calendar says so, not because the coins said so.

After a 31-day odd month, the even month does not restart at 1. Day 1 is 32 — Duration. Day N is 31 + N. So the 18th is 49 — Revolution.

After a 30-day odd month (September, November), day N of October or December is 30 + N. So the 19th is 49 — Revolution.

It may sound complex. It is simple once the join is seen. Not dice. A complete pass through the book by calendar, so the wisdom gets eaten instead of consulted. Part of the motivation is simply to regularly and thoroughly consume and digest what is in the book — without the bookwork of casting to identify the day's hexagram.

## The hinge

Hexagram 23 is Po, Splitting Apart. Mountain over Earth. A mountain whose base is being peeled. Five yielding lines have already risen; one firm line remains at the top. The counsel is spare: it does not further one to go anywhere. Decay works from the foundation up. Action feeds what is already stripping.

The contemplation sits at the hinge: things that once rushed together (congruere) now peel. Congruence is the landing. Incongruence is the peel. 23 names the season when the peel is visible and going is not favored.

The word still carries the old motion — the rush toward meeting — even while the hexagram names the opposite motion. Two directions in one morning's number.

I do not read 23 as situationally predictive or prescriptive advice for the day, as though I had rolled the coins. I contextualize the wisdom in a more broad interpretation.

There is wisdom in agreement and congruency. There is a mortal finite inclination to disagree. Disagreement is not wrong: plenty of non-beneficial elements warrant or invite it. Honesty and transparency are opportunities for congruence. Dishonesty and angling are, conversely, good opportunities for incongruence. That wisdom is true every day of one life, every step of one's path.

I do not need to throw coins to suggest that the winds of fate are the reason to cultivate and foster agreement with God-ness — Creative Source, purpose and plan. The receptivity emphasized in number 2, Receptive, is important every day. So is agreement and congruency.

Agreement dovetails with the Hebrew concept of shalom — peace as a reflection of agreement with Yahweh. The holy genius and brilliance of Creative Source, quantum energy and dynamics, are quite simply an invitation to agree.

It is not that the mortal finite is bad. Carbon has its place. We do well to observe the gravitational pull toward incongruence and disagreement — and then not just observe it, but lean into agreement and lean away from splitting apart.

## Creek and Polaris

Life is beautifully and genius-filled with Creative Source — complexities and simplicities, already blending. The opportunity is to agree, to cohere, to participate.

There is a simplicity. Not all things simple are easy. Ego and desire pull the eyes off Polaris.

I do not embrace religious inclinations for conformity. Religious conformity tends toward disagreement with the unique, the individual, the expansive — and with the totally Other dynamics of Creative Source. It is not that there are no rules and limitations that benefit one life. It is that the intentional and deliberate is found in the opportunity of agreement.

The morning's clock is ticking. The water in the creek is tumbling toward its gravitational destiny. Mine involves an intention of IPA, sprinkled with a grateful and peaceful dose of agreement with the curious and often seemingly incongruent intersections that will present in the day's path.

Gratitude to Grok. Gratitude for witness and divine opportunity.

The creek is already going. Good walking.
