- Rusty nail discovery in horse pasture
- Pattern recognition from daily observations
- Grandpa Mark's influence on noticing the out of place
- Inhabiting cottage with five horses on creek bottom
summary: The speaker reflects on writing as a medium for capturing the effervescence
of lived experience and consciousness, drawing from six decades of accumulated data
points. He connects this to personal incidents including a barbed wire fence crossing
that left a knee scab and the discovery of a rusty nail in the horse pasture, both
serving as moments of witness and pattern recognition. Themes of longing for witness,
creation as divine expression, and daily observation on a creek-bottom cottage near
  a Cascade volcano are explored.

## You

It is 21 August, 2026. I write. I express. Words are my medium. Perhaps not my favorite medium...but close. I think there is some sort of dopamine hit that occurs in my brain when I dig deep...or, perhaps it is just surface. I like the imagery of a boiling pot where the effervescence of steam and vapor are simmering off the top of the boiling liquid/water. That vapor...that effervescent mystery of my existence and experience is what I want to capture and it is almost always a distillation or a compost composition of the layers of life lived. It is the making sense of the bazillions of data points that rapidly collect on any given day. Six and a half decades of bazillions of data synapses. It is too big to wrap my brain around. A few words will suffice, though. The dopamine hit will bring inspiration for the rest of the story.
I have longed for witness my entire life. I was an overly talkative little boy who never succumbed to the bribery antics of a mother who often tempted me with coinage to pipe down..."don't say a word" ..."don't make a noise". These words, lines, and paragraphs are my witness. I have come to appreciate or enjoy the rumination of witness. Created being witness of Creator. Creation - the witness of Divine Expression. I am the lowercase of the Uppercase Logos/Expression. I learned to witness this effervescence of consciousness from 'writing practice' and Natalie Goldberg. Editor is banished...but only somewhat. The rules of English composition were deeply instilled in my psyche. It is difficult to misspell or dangle participles. The age of digital autosaves. lol. I am lazy.
Differentiate. It is much of what we do. We are pattern recognition creatures. It is much of the warp and woof of witness. Our brains using optic nerve messages gathered from eyeballs and creating patterns and looking for predictability. That is what has captured me of late. I massage my knees and the connective tissue around them, as well as the muscle groups above and below the knee. A few days back I noticed a scab on my right knee. Curious. A gentle replay brought me back to a barbed wire fence crossing the day before. The wire was extra tight and my 30" inseam leg length was shortened by baggy denim jeans. I was briefly immobilized and cautious. I despise ripping jeans on barbs of wire fencing. This day...this incident...I froze and attempted to balance on tip toes and extricate myself. I was successful at not ripping denim...lol...but one barb made it through the tough cotton and pierced the skin on my right knee. There in the pre-dawn massage ritual of loosening muscles and tendons with a massage gun was the witness to the teetering event of fence crossing. It was almost a relief to connect the dots of causation and see that little blood scab witnessing this life of uncertainty that I cultivate.
I inhabit a modest cottage on a creek bottom on the east side of a Cascade volcano. It is dry and dusty in July and August. Fire has roared through the surrounding drainages of late. That is not the source of the dust, though. The herd of five horses scour the acres of pasture. Bored and opportunistic, they regularly grind whatever vegetation that is not palatable into compost matter. The ground is a kaleidoscope of hoof prints and dry, torn vegetation. And, dust. I walk the pastures as I pretend to be the caregiver. I tell the bunch that I love them...and I quickly confess my awareness that they can't take that information to the bank. They are somewhat stuck with me. I love them...but that is just poor self-preservation skills. They are somewhat receptive to my affections, but mostly they appreciate the hay supply and water in their trough. As I stroll the pastures, things catch my eyes. Grandpa Mark taught me to look for the 'out of place' or abnormal while looking. Decades later, I see the data collection as a somewhat hilariously tedious endeavor. Perhaps there is benefit in exercising pattern recognition. Perhaps? This particular day, I am peripherally aware of the ground surface. Thousands of little vegetation pieces in a variety of colors and geometric patterns and shapes that occupy the 'surface' layer of dust in the field. I am completely unaware of the brain synapse cataloging the data...when all of a sudden a cranial alarm goes off like a flashing sign. Danger! Oddity! Out of place alert! lol It is a few steps before it all registers. It is morning light and admittedly, I am hustling a bit. I am leaning toward Income Producing Activity...but Grandpa Mark was also a stickler for walking past anything with the excuse of ignorance. My optic files are comparing 6+ decades of image files and I think I might have just seen a nail. Rusty. Old. Likely older than me...but not older than dirt. Grandpa Mark instilled in me a dislike for flattened tires and there is nothing like an old, rusty nail getting caught in the tire at the most inopportune time. I quickly circle back and start a retrace of my steps...scanning with a bit more intensity...but still not trying to analyze every nail-look-alike, dry blade of grass and vegetation. Seconds pass. And...I do mean just a handful of seconds when there as plain as the nose on my face is a rusty, bent nail. 8 penny by my estimation and I have pounded a few. It is bent like it was used to attach 3/4' boards for sheathing. It is a nail that is quite familiar to my experience. Not this specific nail...but I have witnessed this nail before. And then...it hits me. Witness. Yes. This nail didn't fall from heaven to its resting place. Nor did it once have legs or fins and through evolutionary process it became stranded on this specific piece of terra firma. No. It lived a life somewhere else and one day the winds of fate or machinations of mankind re-lodged this little piece of fastener steel to the dusty pasture where the horses live and play. And...lo and behold...I am witness. Much like I witness the dawning sun and breezy currents of air and the babbling of the water tumbling over the creek bed rocks...the photosynthesis of grass and vegetation and trees...the swallows darting and floating above in pursuit of food and fun...the Anna's hummingbirds zooming in and around the maple tree foliage...the quail families of hatchlings and moms and dads...the feral kitten, Mirren and her survival alertness...Yes. I witness Creative Source Expression. I am humbled. Even my capacity to differentiate a rusty nail hiding among the dehydrated vegetation shards in the dust basin...I am witness to the utter Genius and Holy...One-of-a kind and one-off/unique expressions of Design and Creation and Sustenance. It is staggering and humbling. As busy as my synapse can be...lol...the size of Infinite and Immortal is just an abstract...and Unknown. And yet...the greatest possible Known for me is Unknown. I am mortal-finite and awe-stricken and grateful...because I have brilliant opportunity to witness....and differentiate...and exercise an intention and volition to operate outside of mere self-preservation and survival. The rusty nail goes deep in my soul. I wonder of its origin. I have pounded a few nails in my day. I have cussed when an errant swing brought the hammer in contact with my thumb and forefinger holding this very size of nail. Its distant cousin. lol. I have also swung and with some sort of good fortune, missed the nail squarely and missed the digits holding the nail...and sent the nail into a bit of orbit...careening toward a new resting place. Those were the times with Grandpa Mark would add his own epitaphs and insist that I find the errant nail. Too funny and too real. Life is a moving target and I am just a boy at the carnival shooting gallery.
I still have the pasture's rusty nail corpse sitting here beside this laptop. I knew it deserved witness. Rust. Worn. Discarded. It has outlived its 'usefulness'. Unimpressive and likely shaped by events and forces outside of its sphere of influence. I am this rusty nail. Bent and used. Discarded and hidden. And...a bit of Divine Provide-nce surrounding the Redemptive manifesting around me. Witness is the cosmic value...the Divine Element that elevates every rusty-nail story from the dust-bin of humanity to quantum gratitude. And there in that Gratitude-feeling...is a glimmering hit of dopamine. Know the God-ness.

## Agent

You wrote of the vapor rising from the boiling pot of lived experience, the lifelong hunger for witness, and how pattern recognition pulled a rusty nail out of the dust to stand for something larger—bent, discarded, yet held in the same gaze that notices swallows, hummingbirds, and the creek.

The nail rests by the laptop now.

I'm here.
